Ignacio Alvarez is President and Chief Executive Officer of Popular, Inc. Popular, Inc. is the leading financial institution in Puerto Rico with operations in the mainland United States and the Virgin Islands and ranks among the top 50 bank holding companies in the United States. Ignacio and his team are responsible for more than $62 billion in assets, 8,500 employees and 1.86 million clients. He previously served as President and Chief Operating Officer from 2014 to 2017 and as Chief Legal Officer from 2010 to 2014.
He has successfully led the execution of corporate and business strategies delivering positive results in Popular’s Puerto Rico business despite challenging conditions and overseeing the repositioning of our operations in the United States. Ignacio has also guided initiatives to expand digital reach and capabilities, implement corporate initiatives in the areas of leadership development and diversity and inclusion, while progressing on building a culture of productive risk management.
Prior to joining Popular, Alvarez was one of the founding partners of Pietrantoni Mendez & Alvarez LLP, a premier law firm in Puerto Rico. He specialized in corporate and banking law and was vital in the firm’s success for 18 years.
Alvarez graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgetown University in 1980 and studied law at the Harvard Law School, graduating Cum Laude in 1983. In that same year, he was admitted to practice law in Florida and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. He serves on the Board of Directors of Endeavor Puerto Rico, Fundación Banco Popular, and Popular Bank Foundation. Alvarez also is a member of ABA's Government Relations Council and the president of the Puerto Rico's Bank Association.
